Dear Residents:
“According to local weather forecast, a snow storm is likely to arrive in central Virginia Wednesday mid-day and last until Thursday morning”. Depending on where you live and direction of the storm when it arrives some areas could receive as much as 1 – 12 inches.
Should this occur, we should be prepared for wide spread power outages, damage from falling trees and limbs and severe road conditions. In the event of power outage make sure that you are using battery-operated lanterns and flash lights. Candles, oil lanterns, and anything else that burn can pose a significant fire hazard and are prohibited in your lease/community policies. It would also be advisable to have your cell phone fully charged.
In addition to the above, below is a list of actions you also might want to take:
- Have enough flashlight batteries for 3 sets.
- Store enough drinking water for 4 days. If you do not want to purchase water just fill jugs or pans with water and keep it in a safe place. It does not have to be kept cold.
- Have non-perishable food for all family members for 3-4 days.
- Use up the food you already have in your refrigerator now so if the power goes out it will not spoil. Also, consider cooking food you have in your freezer and eat it now. This way if the power goes out it will not be wasted.
- Set up communication with friends or relatives outside this area as a point of contact for emergency services.
- Have enough cash on hand to purchase items as needed. Have small bills as stores that sell food and gas may not be able to make change for a $20 bill.
- If it is necessary to leave, be sure to leave a note in your apartment where you are going and a phone number so someone can find you.
- Identify the local shelters and find out when they will open in case you have to go somewhere that may have heat.
- Be sure your vehicle has a full tank – if the power is out, you cannot pump gas
Stay tuned to local news and obey, any and, all warnings and precautions. We are in hopes that nothing happens and the later part of the week will go by with no issues, but just in case you will be prepared.
